Arthur,
The Zehntbauer Foundation was founded in 1954 in recognition of the services rendered to Jantzen Inc. by John A. Zehntbauer and C. Roy Zehntbauer. The foundation is an Oregon non-profit corporation, which was formed to receive contributions for educational purposes from Jantzen Inc., other corporations and individuals. Until 2003, the Zehntbauer Foundation was run by executives of Jantzen Inc., who kept the Foundation true to its mission of supporting education.
In May of 2003, I happened upon the Zehntbauer Foundation while researching corporate names including our family name, "Zehntbauer." I contacted the then President, Lee Thorkildson. This turned out to be a fortuitous contact. Mr. Thorkildson was exploring options for making a one time endowment with all remaining assets and winding up the Zehntbauer Foundation. However, Mr. Thorkildson was amenable to the idea of the great grandchildren of John A. Zehntbauer taking over as Trustees, thus keeping the Zehntbauer Foundation alive and well and continuing the mission for which it was created.
In May 2003, Eric Zehntbauer, Orion Addis and I became the three Trustees of the Zehntbauer Foundation. I currently serve as the Chairman and President of the organization. Recently, we elected Alex Bloom as our fourth Trustee. It truly an honor to carry on the mission of supporting education and perpetuate our family name in a way I hope would make our great grandfather proud.
In the last three years, we have continued supporting higher education by giving a full scholarship to Oregon State University and a near full scholarship to Portland State University. Currently, the scholarship to OSU goes to an outstanding student in the apparel program - certainly appropriate given the Jantzen Inc. origins of the Foundation. The PSU scholarship goes to an outstanding student in the business program with a demonstrated entrepreneurial focus. In both cases, the scholarship
recipient is selected by the University. In the future, we hope to expand the Foundation's philanthropy to include the University of Oregon, the Portland Public Schools and others. In order to do so,
we encourage donations to the Foundation.
We certainly welcome any contributions. All contact and correspondence may be directed to my attention at the address below.
Best regards,
David
